If you’ve Googled “cheapest shipping from China to Japan” or “how long does shipping from China to Japan take”, you’ve probably found a wall of outdated blog posts. We built this engine on something better:a program developed by the CSL team based on 15+ years of China–Asia shipping experience and our own shipment records — real rates and real transit times from cargo we’ve actually moved on the China–Japan lane, the shortest major shipping lane out of China. Answer four quick questions about your cargo type, size and destination region — Kanto, Kansai & Chubu, or Kyushu. The engine compares live 2026 market rates for express, air, ocean LCL and FCL, then recommends the best fit with honest cost ranges and the reasoning behind the call.
Fill in weight, volume, cargo type and destination above to get a recommendation.
Sensitive cargo (batteries / liquids / powder / chemicals / food) needs DG handling and cannot be priced automatically. Rates depend on the cargo class, MSDS and carrier approval, so we quote case by case.
Request a quotePick your origin port and destination region — the map traces the lane across the East China Sea while the card shows 2026 market rates and realistic transit times based on current sailing schedules. Japan is a multi-gateway market: Tokyo and Yokohama serve Kanto, Nagoya serves Chubu, Osaka and Kobe serve Kansai, and Moji is the western gateway into Kyushu. Central China origins (Shanghai, Ningbo) reach Kanto in 4–6 days and Kansai in 3–5; South and North China run 5–8; Yangtze River origins barge to Shanghai first and take 8–14.

Pick an origin airport in China and compare air freight from China to Japan per-kilo rates across the three standard weight breaks — freighters land at Tokyo Narita (NRT) for Kanto or Osaka Kansai (KIX) for the west. This is one of the cheapest and fastest air lanes out of China: direct freighters cover the 2–4 hour flight daily, and cargo typically clears within 1–2 days through NACCS. One rule to remember before comparing: air freight bills on chargeable weight — one CBM is billed as 167 kg.

Freight is only part of your landed cost. The good news for importers: Japan applies no punitive tariffs on Chinese goods at all — after the US and Canada lanes, the tax side of this route feels almost too easy. Here’s what actually applies in 2026:

Japan is Amazon’s third-largest marketplace, and Chinese sellers dominate its new-seller signups. But the border works differently from the US FBA model you may know: Japan requires someone to be legally responsible for the import, and a foreign company without a Japanese entity can’t simply be that someone. Four things decide whether your first container sails smoothly or sits at the dock:
The honest answer: it depends — but not mysteriously. Ninety percent of your price is explained by four variables: mode, volume, origin coast, and the week you book. Below are 2026 market reference rates from our own China–Japan lane data, so you can sanity-check any quote before you commit to it:
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $230 – $550 | Port-to-port. Central China (Shanghai, Ningbo) sits at the low end with near-daily direct loops; Taiwan transship adds days and dollars at the top end. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP | Per container | $420 – $1,000 | The workhorse. Below ~13–15 CBM of cargo, LCL usually wins; above that line, book the full box. |
| Ocean FCL — 40HQ | Per container | $430 – $1,050 | Same slot price as a 40GP with ~15% more cubic volume — the best per-CBM value for light, bulky cargo. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $40 – $90 all-in | W/M: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Includes origin consolidation and destination CFS handling. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $1.30 – $3.50 | Airport-to-airport into Narita (NRT) or Kansai (KIX). One CBM bills as 167 kg; rates step down at the +100 / +300 / +500 kg weight breaks. One of the cheapest air lanes out of China. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.80 – $5.50 | Door-to-door in 2–4 days. One CBM bills as 200 kg; parcels under 21 kg are priced at a premium per box. |
| Sea DDP line | Per kg | $1.40 – $1.90 | All-in door-to-door: 10% consumption tax, clearance and delivery included. Nothing to pay on arrival. 5–10 days. |
| Air DDP line | Per kg | $3.80 – $5.00 | All-in door-to-door with consumption tax included. The 2–5 day middle lane between air and courier. |
These are reference rates, not a price list. Ocean and air rates move weekly — the number that matters is the one on your written quote. Three forces do most of the moving on this lane:
The market rate for the move itself: a container slot (FCL), per-CBM (LCL) or chargeable kg (air). On this ultra-short lane it’s the cheapest line on the invoice — not the biggest.
Fuel (BAF), peak season (PSS), congestion and GRI increases, security and documentation fees. Budget 15–30% on top of base freight — more before CNY and Golden Week.
THC, pickup and export clearance in China; Japan THC, CFS handling and port fees — per container or CBM. Japanese terminal costs are among the world’s highest.
10% consumption tax on CIF value plus any duty, customs brokerage, local trucking to the final door or the Amazon fulfillment center. Bundled into DDP rates; itemized on FCL.
Transit time is where quotes differ the most — and where the fine print hides. A “4-day” service means 4 days on the water, not to your door. Here is every major mode side by side, linehaul and door-to-door:
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — Central China | 3–6 days sailing | 6–10 days | Shanghai and Ningbo run near-daily direct services into Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay and Osaka Bay — the fastest ocean product on this lane. |
| Ocean FCL — South China | 3–8 days sailing | 8–12 days | Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Hong Kong; daily loops but a longer passage through the East China Sea. |
| Ocean FCL — North China | 3–6 days sailing | 8–12 days | Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian; strong direct coverage into Kanto and Kyushu (Moji). |
| Ocean FCL — Yangtze River | 8–14 days sailing | 12–18 days | Chongqing and river ports barge down to Shanghai first, then transship — the slowest but cheapest route for inland factories. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 7–12 days | Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add roughly half a week on each side. |
| Air freight | 1–2 days | 2–4 days | Direct freighters cover the flight in 2–4 hours into NRT or KIX; NACCS clearance runs same-day. |
| Express courier | — | 2–4 days | Fastest door-to-door. Per-box limit sits around 65 kg — heavier cartons must fly or sail. |
| Sea DDP line | — | 5–10 days | Tax and clearance settled at booking; no separate import step on your side of the fence. |
| Air DDP line | — | 2–5 days | Clears and delivers to the door — the shortcut when courier is too dear and ocean too slow. |
One decision matters more than any other on ocean freight to Japan: direct vs transship service. Direct intra-Asia loops from Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao or Shenzhen run 3–8 days on the water. Bargain-rate bookings on the big lines often transship via Busan or Kaohsiung and add 2–4 days plus a missed-connection risk. And whatever the mode, your door-to-door clock is really four separate clocks:
| Stage | Ocean FCL | Air Freight | What Can Delay It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup & origin handling | 2–5 days | 1–2 days | Container or flight space availability, factory readiness, booking cut-offs. |
| Transit time (Sea / Air) | 3–14 days by origin | 1–2 days | Direct vs transship routing; Yangtze River origins add the barge leg. |
| Japan customs clearance (NACCS) | Hours – 1 day | Same day | Entries file electronically through NACCS; most cargo clears same-day. Delays are almost always documentation — wrong HS code, missing importer data — not inspection. |
| Release & final delivery | 1–3 days | 1–2 days | Terminal appointment slots, CFS deconsolidation queue, warehouse booking. Japan’s trucking network is excellent once cargo is out. |
Unlike the US (nine gateway choices) or Canada (four gateways plus a winter problem), Japan asks a practical question —which island, which market. Seven gateways cover the entire archipelago: the Tokyo Bay pair for Kanto, Nagoya for Chubu, the Osaka–Kobe twins for Kansai, Moji for Kyushu, and Narita / Kansai airports for air cargo. Pick the one closest to the final door — Japan’s north–south length makes the wrong port a 2–3 day trucking mistake. Transit times below are port-to-port from Shanghai; pick your own origin in the matrix above.
| Gateway | Transit from Shanghai | Role | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (Ohi / Toyosu) | 4–6 days | Kanto’s consumer gateway — the biggest metro market on earth at 37M+ people | Kanto-region delivery, Tokyo Bay area distribution centers |
| Yokohama | 4–6 days | Japan’s busiest container port by volume; Kanto industrial and consumer cargo alike | Kanto and Koshinetsu industrial delivery |
| Nagoya | 3–5 days | Ise Bay gateway serving the Chubu manufacturing belt — Toyota country | Automotive parts, Chubu and Hokuriku delivery |
| Osaka & Kobe | 3–5 days | The Kansai twin ports; Osaka for consumer goods, Kobe for general and bulk cargo | Kansai and Chugoku delivery, KIX airfreight overflow |
| Moji (Kitakyushu) | 3–4 days | The western gateway at the Kanmon Strait — closest Japanese port to China | Kyushu delivery; the fastest ocean transit on the lane |
| Tokyo Narita (NRT) | 1–2 days | Japan’s primary air cargo gateway; the bulk of China–Japan freighter capacity | Kanto air freight and express, same-day NACCS clearance |
| Osaka Kansai (KIX) | 1–2 days | The Kansai air cargo hub on its own island — 24/7 freighter operations | Kansai and western Japan air freight and express |
The pattern is short hops and high frequency — every gateway above receives multiple direct sailings per week from China, and the whole lane behaves more like a domestic trucking network than an ocean trade. That frequency is why the China–Japan lane tolerates late bookings better than any other major route out of China.
Everything above assumes cargo moving out of China. But the same vessels sail both ways, and Japan to China is a business of its own: Japanese capital equipment and automotive parts heading into mainland factories, brand-name consumer goods feeding China’s cross-border e-commerce, stock rebalancing, and consumer returns flowing back. Because it’s the backhaul leg of the China–Japan lane, ocean rates often run cheaper than the headhaul you saw above — the real work sits in China’s import regime, not the freight. 2026 reference rates:
| Shipping Mode | Billing Unit | 2026 Reference Rate | What You Should Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — 20GP | Per container | $150 – $500 | The backhaul leg of the same vessels shown above — typically $50–150 cheaper than the China–Japan headhaul. Japanese regional ports sit at the higher end. |
| Ocean FCL — 40GP / 40HQ | Per container | $250 – $800 | Same slot economics as the 20GP with double the floor space. Below ~13–15 CBM, LCL usually still wins in this direction too. |
| Ocean LCL | Per CBM | $30 – $70 all-in | W/M: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Consolidates at a Japanese CFS, deconsolidates at the destination CFS in China. |
| Air freight | Per kg (chargeable) | $1.20 – $3.00 | Narita and Kansai to Pudong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Beijing. Direct freighters cover the flight in 3–4 hours; one CBM bills as 167 kg. |
| Express courier | Per kg (chargeable) | $2.50 – $5.50 | Door-to-door in 2–5 days. One CBM bills as 200 kg; per-box weight limits sit around 65–70 kg. |
Transit times mirror the westbound lane almost exactly — same vessels, same ports, opposite direction. What changes is the destination-side clock: China’s port, airport and customs handling runs longer than Japan’s same-day NACCS clearance, and cross-border e-commerce goods route through bonded warehouses with their own declaration path, so door-to-door numbers stretch accordingly:
| Shipping Mode | Transit time (Port / Airport) | Door to Door | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL — into South China | 5–8 days sailing | 9–13 days | Direct loops from Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay and Osaka Bay into Yantian, Shekou, Nansha and Xiamen. |
| Ocean FCL — into Central China | 3–6 days sailing | 7–11 days | Shanghai and Ningbo; the shortest leg on the lane mirrors the headhaul. |
| Ocean FCL — into North China | 5–8 days sailing | 9–14 days | Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian — fewer direct sailings than the Kanto loops. |
| Ocean LCL | +3–5 days vs FCL | 10–16 days | Consolidation in Japan and deconsolidation at the destination CFS add roughly half a week on each side. |
| Air freight | 1–2 days | 3–5 days | NRT / KIX freighters into PVG, CAN and SZX; China customs clearance at major airports runs 1–2 days. |
| Express courier | — | 2–5 days | Fastest door-to-door for parcels; the practical limit per box sits around 65–70 kg. |
