What's Rail Freight?

The China-Europe Railway Express is the land bridge between Asia and Europe. Your goods travel by train through Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus into Poland or Germany — arriving in 11–18 days. It costs about a fifth of air freight and is twice as fast as sea freight. For medium-to-high-value cargo that can't wait for a ship but doesn't justify the cost of a plane, rail is the sweet spot.

FCL vs LCL — which rail option fits you?

Rail freight comes in two modes. Picking the right one depends on your cargo volume, urgency, and budget.

FCL (Full Container Load)LCL (Less than Container Load)
What it isYou rent an entire container — 20GP, 40GP, or 40HQ.
Everything inside is yours.
You share a container with other shippers.
You pay only for the space your cargo uses.
Container sizes20GP (28-30 CBM / 28.26 ton)
40GP (58-60 CBM / 28.78 ton)
40HQ (68-70 CBM / 27.76 ton)
N/A — your cargo is consolidated by the forwarder
How you're chargedFlat rate per container,
regardless of how full it is.
The total cost is yours, not shared.
Per CBM or per kg —
whichever yields the higher charge.
Pay only for your consignment, not the empty space.
Transit time11–18 days station to station15–22 days (adds consolidation + deconsolidation at each end)
Best forLarge volume, regular shipments,
fragile or high-value goods
you don't want co-loaded
Small batches, trial orders,
mixed SKUs, anything under about 15 CBM

Still unsure? If your cargo fills more than half of a 20GP, FCL is usually cheaper per unit. For smaller loads, LCL avoids paying for empty space. Ask us and we'll calculate both for your shipment.

Cost components of rail freight

A full rail shipment has four stages of cost. Here's what you'll pay at each one.

Rail Freight Rate

Your container slot on the train. Indicative 2026 FCL rates: 20GP ~$3,500–5,500, 40HQ ~$4,500–7,000. LCL: ~¥3.5–6/kg (DDU/DAP) or ~¥8–12/kg (DDP). Varies by city and season.

Pickup, Customs & Transshipment

Domestic pickup fee within China, outbound customs declaration fee, and gauge-change transshipment at the China-Kazakhstan border (~$400–800 per container). Winter heating surcharge (HGF) applies Nov–Mar on Russia routes.

Terminal & Handling

Destination THC: ~€200–400 per container (Hamburg, Duisburg, Malaszewicze). Plus rail waybill (SMGS/CIM) document fees and destination brokerage.

Customs & Last-Mile

Import duty and VAT at destination (EU VAT 19%–27%). Station-to-door trucking (LTL/FTL). Container detention beyond the 7-day free period.

Other active routes include Zhengzhou (郑欧), Chongqing (渝新欧), and Suzhou (苏满欧). All routes converge at the Kazakhstan or Manchuria border crossing and follow the same Eurasian corridor. Tell us your cargo and we'll match you to the best departure hub.

What can and can't be loaded by rail

Rail has fewer restrictions than air, but more than sea. Here's what you need to know before booking.

CategoryExamplesWhat You Need
Electronics (with battery)Phones, laptops, Bluetooth devicesUN38.3 test report required. Pure/standalone lithium batteries are banned on China-Europe trains. Products with built-in batteries may be accepted by some operators, subject to China's railway dangerous goods rules.
Liquids & PowdersCosmetics, detergents, chemicalsMSDS, non-dangerous goods certificate. Many consolidators accept these, unlike air freight.
Magnetic MaterialsSpeakers, motors, industrial magnetsMagnet test report. Less strict than air but still required for declaration.
Fully ProhibitedPure batteries, explosives, flammable gases, radioactive materialCannot be shipped by rail. China-Europe Railway Express explicitly bans standalone lithium batteries and all class 1 (explosives) and class 7 (radioactive) dangerous goods.

Our Advantages

Rail freight is fast and cost-effective — but only if the logistics are smooth. We tackle the three biggest headaches of China-Europe rail shipping.

01

Guaranteed Container Slots, Even in Peak Season

Christmas and Chinese New Year eat up rail capacity fast. We hold fixed block-space agreements on the Chang'an route, so your container boards on schedule — no last-minute rollovers.

02

Seamless Border Crossing & T1 Transit

Gauge changes at border crossings and customs hold-ups are the top two causes of delay. Our team pre-files declarations and handles T1 transit documents for smooth passage through Poland and into the EU.

03

End-to-End Multimodal, One Point of Contact

Rail is rarely just rail — it's train + truck + sometimes ferry. We manage the full chain: pickup in China, rail to Europe, last-mile delivery to your door. One invoice, one team, zero finger-pointing.

FAQs

What's the difference between FCL and LCL on rail?
FCL (Full Container Load) means you rent an entire container — 20GP (28-30 CBM), 40GP (58-60 CBM), or 40HQ (68-70 CBM). You pay a flat rate per container, whether it's full or not. LCL (Less than Container Load) means you share a container with other shippers. You pay only for the space you use, per CBM or per kg. FCL is faster (no consolidation wait) and safer (no co-loading risk). LCL is cheaper for small volumes under ~15 CBM. If your cargo fills more than half a container, FCL usually wins on cost per unit.
How long does rail freight take?
Station to station: 11–18 days from China to major European hubs (Malaszewicze, Duisburg, Hamburg). The fastest fixed-timetable trains from Xi'an reach Duisburg in 11 days; regular trains take 15–18 days. FCL is faster than LCL, which adds 2–4 days for consolidation and deconsolidation. Door-to-door by multimodal (rail + truck): 22–28 days, depending on the final destination. For the UK, add a ferry crossing — plan 22–28 days total. No other freight mode gives you Europe in under 3 weeks at this price.
Which departure city should I choose?
The top three: Xi'an (Chang'an) has the most frequent departures and best reliability — the "express line" of China-Europe rail. Chengdu (Rong'ou) is fastest for Southwest China electronics. Yiwu (Yixin'ou) is ideal if you source small commodities and need strong LCL consolidation. Other options include Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Suzhou, Wuhan (Han'ou), and Guangzhou (Guangwu). Pick the hub closest to your factory to save on domestic trucking. Tell us your address and we'll recommend the optimal route with the earliest available departure train.
What can't be shipped by rail?
Pure/standalone lithium batteries, explosives, flammable gases, and radioactive materials are prohibited. The China-Europe Railway Express explicitly bans standalone lithium batteries — this is stricter than sea freight. However, products with built-in batteries (phones, laptops) may be accepted by some operators if they have a UN38.3 test report and comply with China's railway dangerous goods regulations. Liquids, powders, and magnetic materials can generally go by rail (with MSDS and test reports), which makes rail more flexible than air for these categories. If you're unsure, send us your product details and we'll check with the operator.
What documents do I need for rail freight?
The core three: a Rail Waybill (SMGS for the CIS segment, CIM for the European segment), a Commercial Invoice, and a Packing List. For goods transiting through Poland to other EU countries, you'll also need a T1 transit document. For shipments to Central Asia (e.g., Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan), a Certificate of Origin is also required. Import into the EU requires an EORI number. Special cargo adds MSDS, UN38.3, or fumigation certificates. Unlike a sea Bill of Lading, the rail waybill is not a document of title — it's a transport contract.
Rail, sea, or air — which should I pick?
Rail is the middle ground: about 80% cheaper than air per kg (roughly one-fifth the cost) and 2x faster than sea. Use rail when sea is too slow (e.g. seasonal restocks for Prime Day or Christmas) but air would eat your margin. Heavy goods like auto parts and machinery are a strong fit — rail's container pricing makes weight less painful. If your goods are worth over ~$8–10/kg, rail's faster turnover usually justifies the premium over sea. For low-value bulk or very urgent shipments, stick with sea or air respectively.
