What's LCL?

LCL (Less than Container Load) is a cost-efficient ocean freight method where multiple shippers share space inside a single container — you pay only for the volume (CBM) your cargo occupies, making it ideal for shipments under 15 CBM that don’t justify a full container. As a leading China sea freight forwarder, CSL consolidates your cargo with compatible shipments at origin and delivers it intact at destination.

Cost components of LCL transportation

Freight
(Per CBM)

LCL ocean freight is billed per cubic meter (CBM) your cargo occupies. Chargeable volume is the greater of actual CBM and volumetric weight (1 CBM = 1,000 kg). Typical China–US West Coast rates: about $25–60/CBM.

CFS & Handling

Container Freight Station charges cover consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination — typically $15–40 per CBM at each end. Small shipments may also trigger a minimum charge of 1 CBM even if your cargo is smaller.

Surcharges & Local Fees

Dynamic fees including BAF (fuel surcharge 15%–25%), PSS (peak season $100–300 per shipment), CAF (currency adjustment), and destination delivery charges that vary by port.

Customs & Documentation

Customs clearance ($50–150 per ticket), documentation fee ($20–60), and ISF filing for US imports. Destination duties and taxes are charged separately based on cargo value and HS code.

Our Advantages

Selling globally is hard enough — shipping shouldn't be the part that breaks your supply chain. We solve the three biggest logistics pain points overseas sellers face when moving cargo out of China.

01

Never Miss a Restock Window

Stockouts kill rankings and sales. We secure guaranteed container space on major lanes — even during Q4 peak season and Chinese New Year — so your inventory lands before you run out, not after.

02

No Surprise Costs, No Hidden Fees

Unexpected DTHC, demurrage, and "destination service charges" destroy margins. You get an all-inclusive, itemized quote upfront — the number you see is the number you pay, with zero last-minute add-ons.

03

Customs Cleared Before You Wake Up

Customs holds and missing paperwork can trap your container at port for weeks. Our licensed agents clear shipments early and handle ISF, HS codes, and duties — your cargo moves through without delays.

China Domestic Value-Added Services

Beyond the ocean leg itself, we handle everything on the ground in China — pickup, consolidation, customs clearance, certificates, licenses and insurance, all in one quote.

FAQs

When should I choose LCL instead of FCL?
LCL is usually the cheaper option while your cargo is below ~13–15 CBM (roughly 6–8 standard pallets). It suits small, irregular, or multi-destination shipments and lets you ship as demand builds. Above ~15 CBM, FCL typically becomes more cost-effective per unit, plus it ships faster with fewer handovers — once volumes are stable, switching to FCL cuts unit costs and transit time.
How is LCL pricing calculated?
You pay per chargeable CBM — the greater of your cargo's actual volume and its volumetric weight (1 CBM = 1,000 kg). Most forwarders apply a minimum charge of 1 CBM per shipment, even if your cargo is smaller. On top of ocean freight, expect CFS charges for consolidation at each end, documentation and customs fees, plus fuel (BAF), peak-season (PSS), and currency (CAF) surcharges when they apply.
How long does LCL ocean shipping take?
Ocean transit matches FCL on the same lane — China to US West Coast ~14–20 days, to US East Coast ~25–35 days, China to Northern Europe ~30–40 days — but LCL adds consolidation time at origin (~3–7 days) and deconsolidation at destination (~2–5 days). Allow 1–2 extra weeks door-to-door versus FCL on the same route.
What are the risks of shipping LCL?
Because your cargo shares a container, it is handled more times and sits alongside other shippers' goods, so there is a slightly higher risk of damage, loss, or delay. If a customs hold hits one consignee, the whole container can be delayed. Mitigate this by packing for transit, insuring your cargo, and working with a forwarder that quality-checks each consolidation — all standard practice at CSL.
What documents are required for an LCL shipment?
The same core set as FCL: a House Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and Customs Declaration. For US imports, an ISF (Importer Security Filing) is also required before departure. Some destinations add a Certificate of Origin or dangerous-goods declaration. CSL's ops team prepares and cross-checks all paperwork so consolidation and customs holds don't slow your cargo.
Are there size or weight limits for LCL?
Limits vary by carrier and forwarder. As a typical reference, Maersk caps a single LCL package at ~3,000 kg / 29 CBM and a total booking at ~20,000 kg / 60 CBM. Cargo that is oversized, overweight, or non-stackable may not consolidate well — in that case FCL or a dedicated container is the safer choice.
