What's Air Freight?

Air freight is the fastest way to ship cargo. Your goods fly on passenger or cargo planes and arrive in days — not weeks. It costs more than sea freight, so it's best for urgent, high-value, or light shipments. As your China air freight forwarder, CSL manages the whole journey for you.

How air freight is charged

Airlines don't just charge by the weight on the scale — they also charge by the space your cargo takes up. You always pay for the bigger of the two. The simple rule: 1 CBM of space = 167 kg (an IATA standard). Light but bulky cargo is called "bubble cargo" and is charged by its space.

WhatWhat it meansExample
Actual WeightThe weight on the scale (cargo + packaging)100 kg
Volumetric WeightThe weight based on space: volume (CBM) × 1673 CBM = 501 kg
Chargeable WeightThe bigger of the two — this is what you pay for501 kg

Cost components of air freight

Air Freight Rate

Charged per kg of chargeable weight. Indicative 2026 rates: China to US West Coast about $5–8/kg, China to Europe about $4–7/kg. Rates change with demand and season.

Fuel & Security Surcharges

FSC (fuel surcharge) is about $0.5–2/kg and moves with oil prices. SSC (security surcharge) is about $0.1–0.3/kg. Both are per kg and vary by carrier.

Terminal & Handling

THC (terminal handling) at origin and destination airports, about $0.1–0.3/kg each end, plus the AWB document fee of about $15–40 per shipment.

Customs & Last-Mile

Customs clearance ($50–150 per ticket) and destination duties based on cargo value. Airport-to-door delivery is charged separately by distance.

Our Advantages

Air freight is expensive — it should never be stressful. We solve the three biggest pain points when shipping by air out of China.

01

Guaranteed Space, Even in Peak Season

Flights fill up fast before Christmas and Chinese New Year. We lock in cargo space and pallet positions early, so your goods fly when you need them — not when space opens up.

02

Clear Charging, No Hidden Fees

We explain how chargeable weight works, split "bubble" savings with you where possible, and give an all-inclusive quote upfront. The number you see is the number you pay.

03

Cleared Before the Plane Lands

Missing paperwork can trap your cargo at the airport for days. Our licensed agents handle customs clearance in advance — your cargo is picked up right after landing, not after a hold.

FAQs

How is air freight charged?
You pay per kg of chargeable weight — the bigger of your cargo's actual weight and its volumetric weight. Volumetric weight = volume (CBM) × 167. So if your cargo weighs 100 kg but takes up 3 CBM of space, you pay for 501 kg. If your cargo is light and bulky ("bubble cargo"), ask us about splitting the charge — forwarders often share the savings with customers.
How long does air freight take?
Door to door, plan for 3–15 business days. Direct flights are the fastest: China to US West Coast about 1–3 days, US East Coast 2–4 days, Europe 1–3 days. Add 2–5 days at each end for pickup, customs clearance, and delivery. Weekends, holidays, and customs checks add time.
What's the difference between air freight and courier (express)?
Courier express (FedEx, DHL, UPS) is door to door, cleared as fast parcels, and charged per first kg plus per extra kg — best for small items under about 45 kg. Air freight is airport to airport, cleared as general trade, and charged per kg — best for larger commercial shipments. Air freight is usually much cheaper once your cargo passes a few hundred kg.
What can't be shipped by air?
Explosives, toxic gases, and radioactive material can never fly. Lithium batteries (in phones, laptops, power banks) can fly but need a UN38.3 test report and Class 9 packaging. Magnetic materials need a magnet test report; liquids and powders need an MSDS. Not sure about your cargo? Send us the details and we'll check for free.
What documents do I need for air freight?
The core set: an Air Waybill (MAWB from the airline, or HAWB from CSL), a Commercial Invoice, and a Packing List. Special cargo adds extra papers: UN38.3 for batteries, MSDS for chemicals, magnet test reports for magnetic goods. Note that an AWB is a transport contract, not a document that controls your cargo like a sea Bill of Lading does.
Air freight or sea freight — which should I pick?
Air costs about 20–30 times more per kg, so it pays off when time matters more than cost — urgent restocks, high-value goods, samples, or light products. Sea freight wins for large, heavy, or low-value cargo with flexible deadlines. A simple test: if your goods are worth more than about $15/kg, air freight is usually worth it.
